Stephen Crane was a novelist, poet, and journalst. He was born November 1, 1871, at 14 Mulberry Place, Newark, New Jersey. Crane is best known for his novel The Red Badge of Courage (1895) that depicted the experiences of a soldier in the Civil War. During the Spanish-American War (1898), Crame served as a correspondent. David Gray (1870-1968) was born in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Harvard University in 1892, and received a Doctor of Letters from Bowdoin College in 1925. He married Maude Livingston Hall Waterbury, an aunt to Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1914. Between 1893 and 1899, he worked as a reporter and editorial writer for several Rochester and Buffalo newspapers.
